Nike x Off-White "The 50" – 50 takes on the history of modern sneakers

In 2021 the street fashion world stopped again. Nike and Off-White™, under the direction of Virgil Abloh, presented a project that wrote itself permanently into streetwear history: the "The 50" collection, that is 50 variations on the Nike Dunk Low. Every pair was marked with a number from 1 to 50 – creating a limited, coherent and at the same time wildly varied whole.

How it came about – Virgil Abloh and his last great sneaker manifesto

"The 50" was one of the last major works of Virgil Abloh before he passed away in 2021. The collection was conceived as a sequel to the legendary "The Ten" from 2017, but this time – instead of 10 – it brought 50 versions of a single model: the Nike Dunk Low.

Every pair is a mix of materials, details and colour twists. Virgil played with the very idea of uniqueness, building shoes that are nearly identical and yet different – a tribute to the culture of customs, limited editions and individuality.

The release ran as "Exclusive Access" through the SNKRS App, which only added to the mystery and the difficulty of landing a pair.

Build and details – similar, but never the same

The shoes from the LOT 1–50 collection share one base: the classic Nike Dunk Low silhouette with the signature Off-White add-ons. The elements common to all pairs are:

• External "overlace" lacing – inspired by a technical outdoor look

• Zip-tie tags – in silver or yellow

• "Off-White™ for Nike" text on the sides of the upper

• LOT numbers printed on the side of the midsole

• A mix of leather with ripstop, canvas, suede or nubuck

Each number differs in the colour of the laces, tongue, tag, zip-tie and insole – creating that "same but different" effect. The exceptions are Lot 01 and Lot 50, the only ones with different base colours – white and black – which made them the most wanted of the whole series.

Most LOT models sit on a grey base with a white sole, but each one stands apart in the details. The colours of the overlaces and accents include:

• LOT 01/50 – the only ones with a fully reworked build (white and black upper, special details and a premium finish)

The collection was a real treat for collectors – plenty of people tried to hunt down a specific LOT, but most models were assigned at random through the SNKRS app.

The culture around "The 50" – hype, randomness and scarcity

The release of "The 50" was one of the most unusual drops in Nike's history. You could not pick a specific pair – SNKRS App users got "Exclusive Access" and only found out which number they had landed after buying. That turned up the heat of lottery, adrenaline and speculation – and made every pair unique.

The shoes appeared on the resale market immediately, where the value of individual LOTs differed several times over – with a particular cult around numbers 01 and 50.

To this day "The 50" is regarded as one of the most ambitious and best thought-out projects in sneaker history.
