Onitsuka Tiger shoes are a Japanese classic dating back to 1949 and at the same time the oldest line, the one ASICS later grew out of. The core of the range is the Mexico 66 - a model designed for the Mexico Olympics, recognisable by the signature Tiger Stripes running across the whole side of the upper.
The silhouette is deliberately slim and low, closer to a sixties sports shoe than to a modern sneaker. The upper is full-grain leather with suede panels, the sole is thin rubber with a classic tread. The interior has minimal padding - this is a shoe that moulds to the foot, not the other way round.
How to size the Mexico 66
The Mexico 66 runs clearly small - with this model you usually take half to a full size up from your Nike or adidas. The last is narrow, so with a wide foot a full size up is the safer call. The leather gives a little over time.
How to wear them
The flat sole and slim silhouette mean the Mexico 66 looks best with straight or slightly tapered trousers that do not cover the upper. It is one of the few models that works equally well with jeans and with tailored trousers.
