Birkenstock is a German brand that since 1774 has done exactly one thing: build shoes around the shape of the foot rather than around fashion. Paradoxically that is precisely why Boston, Arizona and Milano have become some of the most worn models in streetwear over recent seasons.
The whole design rests on a cork and latex footbed that moulds itself individually to the wearer's foot under body heat and weight. A deep heel cup, raised arch support and a turned-up toe ridge hold the foot in its natural position. The upper is suede, full-grain leather or felt (Soft Footbed versions add an extra foam layer), and the EVA sole is light and replaceable.
How to pick your Birkenstock size
Birkenstock uses its own sizing and sells in two widths: regular and narrow. Your foot should have roughly 5 mm of space at the front and your toes must not stick out past the cork rim. Suede models stretch a little more than leather ones, so do not buy them oversized.
How to wear them
The suede Boston is the safest year-round choice - it works with sweatpants and with straight jeans, and on colder days you wear them with socks. The two-buckle Arizona shines in summer, while the Milano with its heel strap gives more stability.
